After the drawing is on the surface with pencil, the time comes to block in the shapes with basic colors. In normal situations this takes some time but for a painting this large it takes forever. Lets look at some photos and see if I can shed light on my process.
Here I begin blocking in the sky or background color with a simple blue.
This is still a long way from being done....I am on the side of it looks worse before it looks better. This is a great example.
The top banner is painted yellow. This will include some words (which I hate painting!) like FUTURE MAN or MAN OF THE FURURE. I taped off the edge so I can have a nice straight line.
The painting was taken off the wall with the help of my wife and put on the floor. I traced the other side of the banner and used the tracing to duplicate the other side of the banner.
With all the basic shapes blocked in I started to work out the background color. This is a large area and will take quite a bit of paint to cover. I wanted this to be a somewhat stormy sky. The sky starts to get rendered and the background gets brushed into the shape of the robot. This is only temporary and will be fixed after the sky is 95% done. The fact this painting is 7 feet by 7 feet is what is taking so long. Big painting, big problems. The 2 other paintings are not very far in the process. I wanted to focus on this one and then when I get this up and running I will spend more time on the 2 others.
