DRAWING 1

The process always starts with ideas and drawings. These new paintings are no exception. I took an old pen and ink drawing and I am now going to paint it large in a totally different style. This is like when you read a book and then see the movie....or visa versa. These are two different pieces of art, related by me.

This drawing (Untitled) is several years old. I am going to paint this in acrylic and oil on canvas. I then did a thumbnail in my sketchbook to try to think about how I would redo this idea in a new medium.

The next step is drawing this idea onto the surface. I blocked in the shapes in a simple manner. There is no point in drawing in the details because it will just have to be redrawn later anyway. It's going to get covered in layers and layers of paint.

This is the first painting (of the 3) that I am laying out. It is not the biggest but it was the one that was the quickest to being ready to go. I still have a lot to do before I begin painting. In the weeks ahead you'll see how that goes.
